This project was a push into using new forms of media and softwares to create a piece of work with controversial methods.
I appropriated Raja Ampat (2018) by Helen Marden to recontextualize her vibrant work of layering colors and shapes to express how forms can represent experiences and emotions.
My emotions and thoughts provoked by the song “Don't Panic” written by Coldplay was my source of inspiration. The message in the lyrics is dark and expresses how we live in a beautiful world despite all the negative things we see. In those times, we can lose sight of the good, and as a reminder the phrase “We live in a beautiful world” is constantly repeated.
From Marden’s original, I changed the color palette to express my emotions of the song. The audio is reversed to give an unsettling effect. The title of this piece stayed true to the song title “Don't Panic”, and, just like in Marden’s work, inspired me to layer a variety of visuals from the music video to create something chaotic. The irony is that the piece title is an attempt to keep control of your emotions and thoughts but the visuals and audio are chaos.
Choice in color palette:
Dark blue= for the sadness
Bright blue= for reaching clarity as I remember something I didn't realize I forgot
Yellow= hope for the ending tone of the last verse
Orange= for a different kind of happiness that comes directly from uplifting another person
Black= for the hopelessness
